Service Learning: Making Prom Equitable
Service Need:
San Pasqual has a wide gap in terms of socio-economic status. For the most part this gap can be divided across a clear cultural line. This divide can make social gatherings such as prom economically unfeasible to some. Also, the cultural formal dress for this occasion can cause some to be ridiculed for their style of dress. Because of this there is a need not only to spread awareness of cultural diversity but also to provide a means for students to participate in a rite of passage.
Investigation of the Need:
Students will begin to research how much of a need their school has in regards to gathering prom dresses and tuxedos so that they can set a goal to shoot for. Not only that, but students will try to find culturally different types of suits and accessories such as hat, belts, shoes, etc. In order to promote a culturally unbiased type of dress and style. Students will also have to investigate how these materials will be washed and stored and gathered. Students will also need to investigate if other clubs or campus resources such as MEChA can help them in the drive.
Preparation and Planning:
Students will need set clear goals and assign teams and leaders that will make sure each group is on track.
Students will need to prepare and disseminate awareness of the social need and the cultural acceptance of dress. Students will also need to plan how materials will be stored and managed and handed out equitably within the school. Keeping in mind the sensitivity of the high school environment.
Action:
Students will engage in a full blown campaign to raise awareness not only about the economic need of students who want to go to prom, but also to present different cultural variations of tuxedos, dresses, and accessories in order to raise awareness.
Reflection Methods:
During the process students will blog about their experience and ask questions in an open forum where they can give each other advice or ask questions.
After, students will gather in a small group and discuss how much success they had gathering materials and also what they could improve to further help the community.
Demonstration to Others:
Students will create a PSA video and website in order to documenting their success in helping their community and fellow students. This site will also be used as a forum for students to raise cultural awareness within their local community.
Youth Voice and Choice:
Students will have the option to work on a PSA, posters, or contacting local businesses to promote suit drive, their service learning. Students will be able to choose group themselves.
